high school, and my artistic growth

I went to my high school for the first time in over a year today to drop off some pieces for the alumni show.

First of all, I was amazed at my ability to remember all the random back-roads ways to get to it.

Walking through the halls was really interesting for me. All the 'gallery' walls were empty and plain grey, which makes sense, since it's the summer and all. I had a random burst of pride, knowing that my high school was so very art-oriented and encouraging, when I could have went to a regular zoned school and not had the same opportunities to grow.

I think the reason I'm feeling so nostalgic at the moment also has to do with the episode of 'Work of Art' I watched today (from last week). The artists had to create a piece about their childhood and how they realized they would be artists, and they could only use childrens' art supplies. Most of them didn't do too great of a job, just going with 'childhood' and 'art', only 2 did anything with a real personal concept behind them. I was disappointed with Abdi's piece; I liked his first idea, but oh well. The show was taped months ago, it's not like I can change anything...

Anyway, it got me thinking about my own childhood and what might've lead to my decision to pursue art. And, distressingly, I couldn't really think of any moments that stood out to me. Even now, the best I can come up with is in nursery school when we had to paint a large cut out of an apple red or green, and I used both because I thought it was more realistic. And in second grade, on some sort of leaf-related assignment, I counted the number of purple leaves (along with green, yellow, orange, red, and brown) because I had seen purple leaves. Neither of those events are very monumental, and are certainly not related to my current artistic pursuits.

I think I only started to really develop my own interests and talents in high school. I spent those 4 years focusing mainly on photography, with some figurative painting and mixed media thrown in. I was all set to major in photography in college, until the crit for 'opposites'. I had done 2 large 3'x4' grids of paper cranes, one black and one white. Torie suggested I should look into majoring in crafts or fibers, since lately I had been doing those sorts of oddball pieces. And it just clicked in my head that yes, that's what I want to do.

Recently I've figured out what I would love to do, though my mind keeps telling me it'll never work out because this is the real world. I want to make sustainable fiber art. As in, made from natural materials, like well-treated animals and organic plants, as local as possible. I feel it's a good mix of my strong environmental habits and ideas with my artistic interests and tendencies. The problem I see, though, is the expense of wanting to do it. Buying natural materials is always more expensive than synthetic, and when you factor in local materials it gets harder to find and more expensive.

Even if I could affordably get my hands on natural materials, my brain keeps telling me art is not a reliable or smart career choice - fine art especially. And while this isn't exactly 'fine art' it's far from commercial art. I want to be making art for myself in a small studio, but that's not a very reliable way to live. My brain started yelling about health insurance and dentist appointments and paying bills and affording a car and then I just feel like settling for some hourly job to make ends meet, which will likely kill me inside.

As much as I want to, being a professional artist just seems so terribly hard to live on. Then again, my self confidence isn't very high, even when I know I make good art when I put my mind to it.

Today I contemplated taking orders for embroidered shoes. People seem to like the fun patterns most hi-top shoe companies offer, and there's a small market for hand painted shoes, so I think there would be a similarly small market for embroidered shoes as well. But then I get bogged down with how long it takes, and how painful it can be for my hands, and in the end I decide it's just not worth it.

I feel like now I'm ranting...

Maybe I just need to actually make all those recycled jean things I've been meaning to do, make a dozen sock creatures, and sell all that on the Etsy account I got but have only used to buy one shirt.

[no relevant art today. though I did read another amazing bit of 'General Relatively' that had me smiling goofily the whole time. and blue did a bit of art for it!]

the 70s were funkadelic

Went to Kim's 70s party last night. It was pretty awesome. Emily had fun with my hair, I wore my gogo boots and my tube top and drank Mike's Hard.

Anna and Kim decorated Patrick's place with tons of Christmas lights, and real effort was put into the playlist this time, instead of the fail that was the 80s playlist. It was a really nice night, so it was no surprise the party moved to the roof soon after we got there, which was close to 11. I had a hot pocket for dinner when I got there.

And around 12-ish, when I had to go to the bathroom after my 2 Mike's, I realized it's really hard to walk in those boots while not sober. Especially on a slightly slanted roof. So I had to take them off before I stumbled my way right off the roof. Hasib got a bunch of Wendy's for whoever wanted some, and he introduced himself to me for, like, the fourth time.

Around 12:30 the police came. Apparently, Patrick's bitchy downstairs neighbors had called with a noise complaint, and then there was a robbery down the street. They played it off all nice and smooth, cooperating and such. I was kinda terrified. We had to basically stop the party after that, and about half the people left, but we hung around for a few more hours.

Cesley moved to the kitchen and didn't move for probably 2 hours, just drinking PBR. I took a nap on Tom's bed. At some point Patrick took out his bowl, and there was weird unplugged guitar jam session. Liz finally decided we should leave when Cesley got kinda delirious. Kim had to help her down the stairs and to the van. And I think I ended up being the most sober person in our group again, even if I had a bout of the spins and had to sit down for a while. After all, this was my first party since my birthday.

I'm kinda impressed with myself. I continue to manage to drink for a while, suddenly realize I'm getting tipsy and dizzy, and then I stop. And since we usually just hang out at these functions for hours, I get to spent 2-3 hours working off my buzz by nearly falling asleep. I hardly drank at all too. Ces was drinking for probably the whole time. She had a four loco and several PBRs. Crazy. I had a comb in my pocket that I would randomly pull out and use on other people (since my hair had hairspray and curls in it), and after a while of doing that to her she would just ask me to comb her hair. Weird...

Anyway, I should really get dressed and go to the studio to finish my textiles final. Which again will have no crit. Not cool...

ces = england. except not naked.
(though a couple guys did randomly strip to their underwear...)

fuuuuuuuuuuuck

soooooo something's up with my laptop. it won't connect to the internet. every time i try, it says there's an issue with the network adapter drivers or hardware. so i tried to take it to the g2g help desk, since it's under warranty, but when i got there it was close to 6 and the stupid thing closes ridiculously early at 2. so i'll be dropping it off when i come to class tomorrow morning.

WHAT THIS MEANS is i will be online very little for the next week, possibly more. which is really not good for my english paper, but i have that backed up in, like, 2 other places so i should be good.

in other news, i completely finished 3 of my silk scarves and did the resist on 2 more. i finally have a sort of idea for my math final, though i have way too little time to do it in. i'm gonna try quilting a hypercube. we'll see... at least i have my own sewing machine, so i can work on it all night if i have to/no other idea comes to mind. i wish i had an iron though... also, maintenance finally came and put up this neat metal grid thing over my window so it won't get broken again, and they futzed around with the back gate so it actually swings.

NO PICTURE because yeah. i left my ehd at the house, and i'm in the library right now...

but hey, at least with no internet to distract me all the time i can get a ton of reading done!

sound of a thousand whispering words

[again with the song lyrics...]

today was a really good first day back. it was all around a complete success, though maybe not with regards to food...

i learned how to center and make a little cup-bowl on the wheel today. i made 6 in about an hour and a half and got to leave early. i also got incredibly messy. like, the knees of my pants were rather clay-y, as was my shirt. but it was fun and i was happy that i figured out how to do it so fast. i need to remember to bring a container for water wednesday though... but yeah, incredibly fun and satisfying.

not so fun inbetween period, though i ate some tasty soup. attempted to do my quilt patterns, but realized i didn't give myself nearly enough time so yeah. the walk to class was really fun though. literally, as soon as i stepped out of the door it started pouring like crazy, so i had to grab my umbrella before locking the door. between gilmer and goshen i discovered my shoes were soaked through completely. along goshen i took note of my state of wet from the waist down. and by the time i got to the classroom it had stopped raining. i took my shoes off and spent class barefoot, which was pretty fun. the floor of the dye room is strangely gritty though. and the hall to jewelry and fibers has a very warm floor.

i got all my silk painting on the 2 restisted parts done. they look pretty good, even though my shaky hands made my aim sorta wonky... my left palm is mostly covered in dye, green for the most part, as a result of icky bottle caps. oh well. more mess! the first quadrant is purple-y mainly, and the second one is greens. i'm not really sure how to go about the third one color wise... i'll figure it out wednesday.

after class i hit up rite aid and then went to anna's to get a haircut. we went for the angled bob, which looks pretty cool. i don't have any pictures yet, but anna took a couple. and i flipped her off brit-style in one because i was feeling weird. idk...

i hung out with anna, tay, and hassim for a few hours after that. we ate at 5 guys - or, they did, i brought my smoothie over. we went to coldstone and tay got emily to sing. we went to the top of the bookstore parking deck and just loitered for a while. it was really cold though, and windy, so we left. we cut through the fab and visited jenny in her studio. and then we went back to biggs. hassim is getting into film photography, so i talked to him a bit about it. it was nice to be able to still help someone with my vast knowledge of photography.

all in all, a good night. my shirt is really itchy though, even though i had a towel on my shoulders.

i'm not looking forward to tomorrow at all... i really need to write this english paper, but i really can't see that happening... i got a preemptive 4-pack of red bull. hopefully it won't come down to that though.

america with his most common partners. i really like this artist's style.

21 March 2010

here comes the nighttime

[rawr, matt & kim is awesome. are awesome? one of those...]

i got to work produce yesterday. it was kinda fun. and heavy. seriously, one bucket of just lettuce weighed so much! i had to get joe to get one such bucket down from where barret stashed it too high... but yeah. i ran produce for a good 4 or 5 hours. i thought i did a pretty good job. i ended up getting called to bag a lot around 5 or 6, and when i finally made it back produce was a mess. seriously, there were almost no bananas left. also, within an hour of me working it when i got there, when i was putting up bananas [we went through 5 boxes while i was there. no joke...] barret offered me a summer job at more than i make now. sooo yay! he said i had the hands for it, because i was being careful and specific with my banana placement, instead of just kinda tossing them up there. awesome.

i did my taxes last night. refunds all around!

drove back to rva today. exciting. i don't know what it is about 95, but it seriously always puts me to sleep. which is really bad when i'm driving... but yeah, i got in before 11, which was awesome. and then i sat around online til, like, 2 before showering... and then sitting around some more until close to 5 before getting some food. i ended up getting 5 guys and heading to the fab to finish my resisting. so that's done. none of the rest of my homework is though... i'm really terrible, and this week is going to suck.

i've got a paper due thursday morning and some sort of math creation due thursday afternoon. neither of which have even been started. actually, the document for english has the page number header coded in, my info blurb, and a title. but that's the easy part. god, i'm so totally screwed. i still need to find out current handwriting rehabilitation methods. i can tell this week is going to be terrible.

as for math, i know i want to do a narwhal tessellation. maybe something like this, only i have no idea what to put in the sky...

mmmmm, this is an amazing story. it makes me feel guilty for loving it so much...

13 March 2010

home again, home again, etc...

took the greyhound home yesterday for break. exciting, as usual. mom picked me up because dad was working and yasha was on his way to new york with heather for the tim burton exhibit. and everyone who knows him is incredibly jealous. i know i am...

anyway, everything has been going well so far. i brought up the unfortunate housing situation over dinner at red lobster, and when we got home i walled nicole. so i am confident we'll be living together next year, which should be fun. seriously, no sarcasm there. hopefully it'll all work out, seeing as we're both rather prone to add... we should probably start looking for places soon.

matt didn't get into college park, but he did get into cua and pitt. we're still waiting for umbc, and i forget what's up with vt.

dad's going to cali [i think] for the week for work. which sucks for family time, but means there's less people fighting over cars. at least i got to see him some before he left. he's taking a red eye back next sunday. i'm not sure what this means for transport back. i do want to come back saturday because i've gotta work on my silk painting. i need to have all the resisting done by class on monday.

i've got work to do over break, which is unfortunate. i have to work on my review of research paper for english and figure out how my actual paper is going down. i need to come up with ideas for quilt patterns, though that should be pretty easy. i have to do my math final, which i'm pretty sure is going to be some sort of narwhal tessellation. just because. and i may be working-working, though dan hasn't gotten back to me.

and i've got some half-baked [heh] plans for st patty's day with yasha. we're hanging out during the day, because he's got plans with heather for the evening/night. over im we proposed plans, which led to a really weird conversation involving cross-dressing [that's saved as a draft here so i can remember it forever], but i'm realizing i'm not sure exactly how the pre-plan is going to work out. he needs to acquire things. i hope he does. because yeah. [slightly related: i'm hoping 420 pans out for me as well...]

recently i broke down and downloaded a shit-ton of owl city. stupid fsts getting me interested in stuff i normally wouldn't be... like german industrial rock. and french rap - wait, that was jenny. anyway... yeah, i have owl city, which led to me breaking down and getting mgmt, because dammit, it's catchy. which reminded me to download matt & kim, even though they're not related to mgmt at all. oh, my musical escapades...

oh god, i almost started talking about this incredible fic i finished reading, but then i remembered exactly how incredibly inappropriate it is. because it really is. it makes me feel terrible and giddy at the same time, and i love it. grr. stupid guilty pleasures putting me on trains to hell...

uhh... i want to keep talking, but i have no idea what else to say...

well, i just finished blood-winged amazing story, "at the end of all things." and i'm terribly sad that it's over. wahhhh, i don't want it to be over! also, i want her to write more prucan, but that's really beside the point... i'm so sad, i'm rereading the whole thing. or i'm just really bored and craving me some prucan...

idek... pixiv is cool.

10 March 2010

cooking adventures!

i had such a hard time cooking my fish and baking some sticky buns...

first, the fish wasn't thawed so i had to mess around with running it under water for a while... but by the time i was ready to cook it, it still wasn't really thawed. i went ahead anyway. not surprisingly, i found some raw-ish bits near the skin. i flipped it over at one point, and when it landed i got attacked by hot oil. i'm not burned, thank goodness, but i had to clean it off the floor and such. not cool...

then, [or, simultaneously] i couldn't open the sticky bun tube, because kroger sucks. i arranged them in my brownie pan with the goo and the nuts, then remembered i had a bread pan. so i moved them over, and instead of it being too big, it was too small. and i had to bake it for an extra 12 minutes because our oven sucks. oh well, i've got breakfast.

i need to head back to the fab soon to fix my silk so it'll stop being retarded. i'm bringing my hammer and my ambition. i might do some more resist, depends on how bored i'm feeling.

i've started french braiding my bangs down the side of my head and behind my ear. because they're annoying. i think i'm gonna try braiding some fuzzy yarn in with it to make it longer for no reason.

also, aced my film midterm and the embroidery project and my bibs. awesome.

i've got one class left till i'm on break. yay! also, we've got water again at home! double yay!

i have no idea, i just picked it. but it's hilarious.

06 March 2010

i needa title for these shoes...

so, last night i watched 'the fountain'. and i kept associating hugh jackman with a canadian lumberjack, thanks to wolverine, and then i would remind myself he's actually australian, and then i thought of how good he is with accents.

anyway.

i finished the trees and got them mostly attached to the shoe. but i decided my time would be better spent doing the river, so i started it.

movies watched:
- the fountain
-the darjeeling limited
- franklyn

in other [depressing] news, my period hit hard today. i spent a couple hours curled up dozing and trying to ride out the cramps. it's really annoying how sometimes i have ridiculously debilitating cramps, and sometimes i've got almost none. last semester i left jewelry early they were so bad. today i stayed in bed, and then i went to make a sandwich cuz i was starving, i ended up spending at least half an hour semi-conscious on the sofa.

i'm seeing "alice in wonderland" tomorrow with angela. hopefully it'll be awesome. after the movie i'm gonna watch the oscars.

and i need to stop messing around and get back to work. i've done about 2.5 sq in on the river, and i need to kick up the pace.

related: switzerland as alice. ok, maybe it's just crack...

what is this?!

just... it blew my mind with awesome.

writeranon/readeranon

seriously. as the first commenteranon said, "you had me at 'I'll F your 5, bitch.'"

fucking win.

anyway... back to the movies and the embroidery.

and some original himaruya! i think that's the first appearance of mochimerica. maybe the second... i forget...

05 March 2010

tweeking

not really, though.

but yeah. yesterday i ended my sleep-fast. 38 straight hours of not sleeping. i was doing that awkward droopy-eye sleep thing in math, though. it's no wonder i took no notes. but i get to make a for real tessellation for class tuesday, as well as my ambigram. ehh, i'll do that monday night.

but starting around 9 last night i started to get kinda loopy. and then i kept twitching my legs and fidgeting. and then i realized it was that same body-high from new years. well, first i left loopy messages on angela's wall about burn notice and sent yasha a couple loopy texts. and put in my status something about grammar not being real.

went to bed at 10, started gaining consciousness again close to noon. and those 14 hours were amazing.

i went to kroger, just because. got some fruit and a bunch of drinks and some ben & jerrys. and i remembered why i might've purposely lost my first pairs of ipod headphones: the right one never stays in my ear because for some reason that ear canal is smaller than my left one. so, while i get better sound quality and volume with those ones, i'll be switching to my other ones that actually stay on my head.

i made mac & cheese for dinner and mixed in some leftover alfredo 'sauce' that was kinda just cheesey-cream with melted butter. it had separated and looked funny but tasted yummy.

in other news, i finished the first embroidery! i just need to attach it to the shoe and do the detail work.

the first large part was on angela's wall. the rest is mine. and then that's the texts at the bottom. go paint!

02 March 2010

slow down, life!

i am seriously fucked.

i'm really tempted to say i slept in thursday and email the final bib later in the day, like after math. which, i keep remembering, i have to create an ambigram for.

as it is, i'm going to be up till at least 2 tonight meeting my goal of finishing the half i started yesterday, and 2 more. and then i get to skim books to write the other 2 tomorrow. i just remembered i have to finish my design for my silk painting by 2 tomorrow, and i really wish i could skip ceramics but i don't want to fall behind on something else. i don't think i'll be sleeping tomorrow night. and i won't be sleeping through class, i'll be finishing these god-awful bibliographies.

so. things to do this week:
- silk painting design: due 2p 3/3
- 4 and 2 halves annotated bibliographies: due 9:30a 3/4
- ambigram of some word: due 12:30p 3/4
- the rest of ansel embroideries [finish 1, entire other]: due 1-2p 3/8

at least i have the weekend for the embroideries. because i have to completely ignore that until i finish english.

times to work:
3/2: now-2a [bibs]
3/3: 12-2p [bibs, silk design, shower?], 5p-?? [bibs, ambigram?]
3/4: 2p-1a [embroidery]
rest of the weekend for embroidery

and i haven't even had time to shower. i feel so gross, but i don't feel like i can spare the time. i'm going to try between class tomorrow.

i feel slightly better having written exactly what i need to do. slightly. i really shouldn't have baked brownies today, or gone through itunes for what to put on my new ipod when it comes, or even watched 'lost'. because that was 3 hours right there.

i am so totally fucked.

red bull and 5 hour energy are going to be my best friends from now until monday. or, well, from when i get some till monday...

something ridiculous to make me feel better. from the kink meme.

ETA:
i've also managed to chew a part of my lip rather raw. it feels funny on my mug...

[again]
oh god. it's 1, and i'm reading out loud, and hearing myself read what my eyes are seeing, but my brain is not interpreting anything that's going on. i managed to schedule out my life from tomorrow morning till sunday night, though i'm already planning on changing it. i have a feeling i'm going to 'sleep through' english, and am already composing an email to lodge regarding sending him my finished bib by thursday night. i'm going to be watching so many movies this weekend... at least 10. good thing i've got 15 unwatched ones saved...

[again again]
it's 2:30 and i finally finished the one i started yesterday [meaning monday]. fuck i'm in such deep shit with this. i'm done for the night though. so i'm winding down and waiting for the melatonin to set in. yeah, i'm totally screwed...

21 February 2010

insurance?

just in case i suddenly just pass out, i want to say i took 2 melatonin pills. i don't expect it to make me just... fall over asleep, but i'm not sure what exactly will happen.

i've been having bouts of insomnia this past week, which really sucks, especially since i feel absolutely no urge to do my embroidery homework, which i'm worried i will get really behind on, or my annotated bibliographies, which i totally skipped on thursday. i did one, and decided, "fuck it, i'm sleeping through class."

and i accidentally hit the 'back' button and lost the paragraph i had written...

i need to get one shoe done in embroidery for class on monday so i don't fall behind and get totally screwed over for the crit. i've got over a week till the crit, and i'm surprised at how fast i'm going, but still. that would be just like me...

i did almost absolutely nothing today. i woke up at noon, got my bagel, crocheted some while reading fics and watching 'community.' i finally took a shower [since wednesday... eww...] around 8 so i could go out in public and have dinner with angela at chili's. which was fun and tasty. i ate all my food [except the over-herbed rice...] before angela. i was so proud! then i sat around some more and watched some more 'community' and did a little more embroidery. and yeah.

on the main com today i discovered the epic-ness that will be the canada-america men's hockey game tomorrow. even though i refresh the olympics main page obsessively every few hours, i missed that. i need to watch it. i set an alarm on my phone. it's happening.

oh yeah, the tegan and sara concert. i went with liz, laura, adrienne, and a couple other girls they knew that i met in line. my feet were frozen by the time the doors opened, and it wasn't even all that cold out. we ended up somewhat more forward than the middle. it wasn't too bad. though, there was someone near us that had gas literally the entire show. not cool. and i got pushed and ended up next to a crazy barely-teen fan. i seriously looked over at her more than a couple times and was convinced she would burst into tears of absolute joy. and she only knew songs from 'the con' and 'sainthood', which i found terribly sad. if you're such a crazy fan, learn all their songs. i knew most of the songs, except for a couple of the new ones because i just put my music on random and tune in occasionally.

i was excited to learn one of the openers was steel train. when i told matt he was incredibly jealous. they were pretty good live. i was happy they played a couple songs i knew ['firecracker' and 'kill monsters in the rain']. the other opener was holly miranda, who for some reason had their bass turned up more than you'd expect. the singer had a really nice voice though. i'd definitely check out their music.

as for t+s, i quite enjoyed the show. there wasn't as much banter as i was expecting, but they were still fun. they even did a few songs basically acoustic as a sort of encore, which i thought was really cool. they did 'back in your head' with guitar and xylophone, they styled the lighting of 'feel it in my bones' after the vid. overall, it was a good show.

i wonder if my seat number on my ticket, 39, indicates what number i was in purchasing my ticket... and if that shows how much of a nerd i can be... probably...

well, i need to get to bed if i intend to get up before noon and at least make an attempt at being productive. i'm determined to get a lot done on at least one shoe. i really am. movie marathon anyone?

no fics to report on today. i did find a good one today of a post-ww2 human!au though. germany/america, not something i'd read normally. but it was very good and had a hopeful ending.

OH MY FUCKING GOD LOST YOU ARE BLOWING MY MIND I CAN'T EVEN THINK AHHHHHHHHHHHHH

ahem

so. tonight we finally learned the meaning of the numbers. and the lists. and i flipped out.

not-locke takes sawyer to a cave in a cliff side [what an interesting trip that was, going down the cliff] to show him why he's on the island. written on the walls and ceiling of an inner cave are last names with numbers next to them. most of them are crossed out, except for 6. guess which 6. and next to those 6 are one of the numbers. jack was 23, sun and jin were 42 [it's by last name, so 2 for one], hurley was 8 [i think], sayid was 16, sawyer was 15, which leaves kate as 4. all the names are candidates for someone to replace jacob as the guru, now that he's dead.

i flipped the fuck out and started hyperventilating. total shock.

in other news!

i finally had to get a membership to mediafire so i could send fala 'boondock saints 2'. which, by the way, also had a "WTFAHHH" ending. because of fucking willem dafoe. he came back at the end, and it was open to a 3rd, if they so choose. the boys ended up in prison, but it looks like it'll be okay and not sucky and bitch-y and such, but smecker was talking about breaking them out or something. though, greenly and noah died, soo...

thursday is gonna be awesome. not the morning, but i don't count that. we start tessellations in math, which should be fun. and then. TEGAN AND SARA with STEEL TRAIN as one of the openers. YESSS!!!! excitement.

the fic-of-the-moment this time is from the USUK com by semebay, who wrote the epic canada-serial killer fill that i fell in love with. this is an AU with arthur as a recluse [sorta] who lives with the fae and sort-of[-but-not-really] controls them and who does random little magicks and herbal healing and just cool shit. and alfred is a semi-hero [he's got enhanced abilities] who keeps trying to be friends with arthur. and it's adorable at times, but dark and real. i love bay's voice and the way she writes arthur as a believable brit, not some american throwing in those random stereotypical words. fifteen chapters in and the fae have all escaped arthur's tenuous control and are wreaking havoc and killing people. cliffhanger: the last fae that still liked arthur has decided that alfred has to die since he was supposed to but arthur saved him and just GAHH.

thusly. [well, chapter 1. click 'next entry' for the next chapters]

olympics! germany is at the top right now with 9 medals, then america with 8, france with 7, canada with 5, and south korea with 4. both canadian hockey teams are kicking ass: the women whooped slovakia hard 18-0 a few days ago, switzerland yesterday 10-1, and the men just beat norway 8-0. is it weird that i'm cheering for canada more than america? sometimes i really wish i was canadian. i was practicing my accent at random times today. it was fun.

i decided to treat myself to some good quality bagels today. so i spent the rest of my birthday cash on a baker's dozen plus 2 tubs of cream cheese from panera. i can't wait! i made french toast for dinner. yummy cinnamon french toast.

my converse came for my embroidery project. they fit and all. i traced the open spaces on both so i know specifically how much i have to work with. i gridded my reference photos yesterday and will be gridding the print cloth and possibly the shoes [for placement purposes] tomorrow, along with at least laying out the large shapes. i am the master of the grid!

unrelated pic is unrelated. kinda. but mainly it's cute.

fuzz

i decided to try and clean my keyboard. so i systematically removed the tops of entire rows of keys and brushed out the insides. it still didn't fix my space bar problem.

and for some reason i had a really hard time spelling that correctly...

i added a couple more movies to my list. haven't downloaded them yet though.

yesterday i watched "the imaginarium of doctor parnassus" and "mirrormask". the sound ended up being off on 'parnassus', but i wasn't really watching the whole time so it didn't bother me as much as it would have otherwise. i found the cameos rather hilarious. so, heath ledger was tony, but when he went in the imaginarium with someone else, he became that someone else's version of him. so he was johnny depp, and jude law, and colin farrel.

i followed that up with 'mirrormask' because they are related in a sense: a different version of reality with the same people just different. it made sense in my head, ok?

i started my math final. i was going to cross stitch the whole thing, but realized how much work that's going to be. so i'm cross stitching some of it, then stitching that to the canvas and painting in the rest and drawing the tracks on top. hopefully it'll be awesome.

today i watched "wristcutters." which reminded me of "the lovely bones" so i had to torrent that. haven't watched it yet. the actor who was mr nick in 'parnassus' was also in 'wristcutters' as a similarly influential/powerful character, which i found pretty funny. and it took me the longest time to place the main actor, and finally had to look him upon imdb. he was paul trout in 'white oleander'. also, gogol bordello was featured quite prominently in the soundtrack, which made me quite happy.

happy valentine's day, i guess. first time alone in quite a few years. or am i misremembering the breakup with emily... probably... either way. the fills for the prucan exchange were due last night, and they've been posted all day. it made me happy to read all that sweetness and such.

which reminds me of why it can be fun to be friends with rpers on facebook. the canada i'm friends with has been being bro-tastic with an america, and i've been stalking their conversations. related: CANADA GOT IT'S FIRST GOLD WHEN HOSTING THE OLYMPICS! the other 2 olympics that have been in canada [calgary winter, montreal summer], they didn't get a single gold. but today they got gold in men's freestyle skiing. which is what the weird bro-ness started out being about and divulged into petting. weird.

i raided pixiv for olympics!canada pics. it made me happy, especially since annie had one.

i'm not sure if i was going to say anything else...

oh. my horrible procrastination habits are getting worse... that math final is due tuesday at 12:30 and it's barely started. i haven't printed the refs i need for ceramics or textiles. i'm avoiding those annotated bibliographies like the plague. the only productive thing i managed to do with weekend was laundry and my embroidery sample. i want to be able to start the shoes soon, but that's entirely dependent on when i actually get the shoes. hopefully tomorrow, because this is ridiculous...

man, i need to eat that caramel apple...

annie, why are you so awesome?

AMAZING

i found this fantastic mash-ups station on itunes radio. and it's been blowing my mind all day. seriously.

snowday today. when i left home for campus, it was just a tornado outside. i made it to the fab so i could at least check my email [it's doing that thing where it won't load on my laptop], and i was sitting in class, waiting for the crit, when debbie comes in and tells us campus is closed.

i was unhappy that i walked to class in that horrible white-out, only to be told, "nope, nevermind."

oh well. now i have time to figure out how exactly i'm gonna go about my embroidery final. which is hopefully gonna be awesome. i'm embroidering ansel adams photos onto a pair of white converse. i got a ton of floss in every shade i could find from black to white. some are brown-ish and some are blue-ish, but hopefully it won't be a big deal. i ordered the shoes monday, and they should be here this weekend. i really think it's gonna be awesome.

and i'm currently procrastinating on my annotated bibliographies. i finally finished one, after working on it since 5. i just started the second one, and then i got distracted [shocking, i know...] but this one is much shorter than the other one, so it should be easier. hopefully.

i still want there to be no class tomorrow morning, even though i know there will be.

there's over 4 feet of snow at home now. fucking whoa. no school for anyone - big surprise. i'm sad we don't have as much because connor figured out how to make elaborate tunnels in the snow and now i want to turn out back yard into a warren. but that's a lot of missed class, and a lot of snow that just won't leave. seriously, it just keeps snowing. today was the fourth major snowfall this winter: before christmas, the last weekend of january, the weekend of my birthday, and today. and it's supposed to snow again monday. snow is awesome and all, but i think everyone is really sick of it by now.

in other news, i finally gave in and started reading "seven little killers." i've got some theories, but who knows. i'm almost completely sure america is one of the killers, thanks to hoogily spoiling things, and i'm fairly confident canada is one too. possibly hungary, but that's just random speculation. i really like how each chapter is named after a serial killer. i've got a wiki tab open next to the fic so i can learn about the featured killer with each chapter.

relevant pic is relevant! i swear! it's by hoogily...
yayyy prucan!

first week!

first week! doneeee. well, it was done yesterday, but whatevs...

lessee.

english is pretty cool, i guess. jenny had lodge last semester and said he's pretty laid back and cool. there's a former soldier [i forgot which branch] in the class, he was in afghanistan. bryce and krystal are also in it. i'm slightly worried my topic will end up being german expressionism, which is cool and all [it's my favorite art movement], but i think i'm gonna end up bored with it. one of my other ideas was handwriting and how people develop their own styles. i know there's, like, personality tests or whatever based on how a person writes. i also thought of the specific importance and significance of bass lines in music, and the evolution of jazz into other music forms. and deep sea creatures, though i have no idea where i would go with that...

math is pretty fun. jenny is in my class, and theresa from textiles last sem, and krissy and corey. dude, thursday, i learned why perspective happens. and it blew my mind. like whoa. it's hard to explain, but it has to do with planes and how they intersect with your eye as a point in space and yeah. intense. it kinda blew my mind. and our first homework was to take a piece of plastic, tape it to a window, and trace what we see out of it. i did mine from the one window in the craft bathroom, looking across at the parking deck and the corner of rams hall. i thought it was pretty cool, but we'll see.

cinema seems like it'll be fun. jessica is in my class, so i sat with her. we watch a film noir, which was pretty cool up until, like, the last half hour-45 mins, when i was just confused. but still. i'm excited because we get to watch 'vertigo' and 'the royal tenenbaums' and some other movies i was excited about.

which reminds me: i need to 'rent' "the devil's brigade" from itunes. that trailer was hilarious, even though it wasn't meant to be. sometimes i'm such a history nerd...

ceramics may prove troublesome. i'm not terribly excited about it. our first assignment will be to sculpt a boot. maybe 'sculpt' isn't he right word, but yeah. it's also due on my birthday, so i really hope mine doesn't suck because that would be a terrible birthday present. no one i know in that class though...

and textiles. both mollys are in it, which should prove entertaining, along with one of the emilys. i'm definitely excited for that class. we're starting with some intense embroidering. it's structured basically the same as the other semester: one specific project on one technique, then the final which can be anything.

i finally got my bus pass today, so i shall FINALLY be venturing to ben franklin tomorrow. molly b mentioned a quilting shop next to ben franklin, so i'll have to check that out too.

today, being a completely free day of nothing has been interesting. i laid in bed, hitting snooze, for almost an hour. i had some toast, and stayed in bed till a little after 2 when i went to get my bus pass. when i got back, us 3 [me, liz, nicole] went to the gym to check out the pool. it's pretty sweet. there's a vortex, a slide, and a hot tub/jacuzzi, plus quite a few lap lanes. the process to get in for the first time was really confusing though, but hopefully it won't be so terrible next time. then we got 5 guys, which, if we had actually been working out, would have pretty much negated any exercise we got.

and then i took a shower and blow dried my hair with my new round brush. because i'm going to an 80s party at patrick's. i'm excited. i've got a tube top and wedges, which are pretty much the most 80s things i own. though i feel like my hair is more 60s than 80s... oh well. it's byob, so drinks i'll like will be slim pickin's, if at all. i'm not sure how to get liz to get 'bitch beers' for nicole and i. they may be almost alcohol-less, but they sure are delicious.

i wish i had 80s jewelry...

09 December 2009

end!

well, finals week is pretty much over for me now. i just have to stick around until dad can come get me on saturday.

my jewelry final ended up... okay... the construction went well, and i'm happy with how nice and clean it turned out, after i pretty much killed myself to get it done in 3 days. but then i went and painted it without really having an idea of what i was doing. and i'm unhappy with the paint. extremely so. the crit yielded the same thing, that the construction and ring itself was well made, but the paint kinda ruined it. and as soon as i get it back tomorrow i'm going to figure out how to at least remove the paint... i hope my grade won't suffer too much because of that, i really need a B...

as far as textiles went, i didn't finish my piece. i ended up being 3 layers short, but i don't really think that detracts too much from it overall. really, only i know it's unfinished. adrian was sick though, so we didn't have a crit - just set up our pieces in our room and left. i'm picking it up later today, along with paying the last of my supplies fees. i'm pretty confident with my grade there, as i spent wayyy too much time on that stupid thing. my hand is still aching from all that crocheting. i spent a fun-filled weekend of watching movies and crocheting. i got through the entire extended lotr trilogy [though, not quite all at once. i had to sleep some time], followed by catching up on 'house' and then 'emperor's new groove'. yeah, really random.

oh, maintenance! yeah this has been fun...

last week i finally emailed maintenance about a couple problems with the basement: mold and leaking. what prompted me to email them finally was during a super-heavy rain storm, i peeked into the storage room and saw water pouring in from the back corner next to the window. like, i was watching the water rushing in. really bad. they show up the next day, which i'm pretty sure is the fastest they've ever shown up. they made plans for how to go about fixing this.

the next day he shows up with a rented dehumidifier and comes back a little later to bolt and putty the deck to the house so water will stop seeping in through the wall. i figure that'll definitely cut down on the leaking, but i wasn't so sure it would stop completely. the next day he comes back with a high-powered fan and some mildew spray for the back wall. well, that's still in there [and it's kinda loud too...].

last night it rained some more, though not nearly as much as before. i looked in to see if the wall was still a problem, and i found a small hole in the back wall with water trickling in. well, now i know where the water's coming in from. i emailed them again last night, saying i would point it out to them when they came to take the fan back or whatever. so i'm waiting to see if they show up.

i attempted to cram for my bio final last night. it... sorta worked. then i came to the conclusion that i could not remember anything chemistry-related on such short notice and figured i had everything else down pretty good, so i proceeded to get distracted by the newest season of 'top gear'. nicole showed up at some point, and there was a small celebratory party upstairs - liz finally opened that bottle of wine that's been in the fridge almost since we moved in. i went to bed around 2, since i had to get up by 7 for my final, so i'm not sure how long they were up.

but when i came upstairs for my breakfast i found nicole sleeping on the sofa. not even pulled out, just curled awkwardly on it. i tried to be quiet as i was bumbling around. it's really dark at 7...

the final went pretty well, though there were a few questions that i had absolutely no clue about so just picked a random answer. but i think i knew enough to squeak by with a C, hopefully a low B, but we'll see. my current grade is just under a 74, so i hope this grade will be better than that 65 on the second exam so my grade will improve at least a little bit.

also, it's 1 and nicole is still asleep on the sofa.

not sure if i should put this here, but yasha has a creepy stalker who is threatening him through anonymous texts. that doesn't sound bad, but they are really creepy. i really hope nothing comes of them...

but in good news regarding my guy friends, mark is finally really super officially dating becca! and it's cute. so yay!

and i'm making plans to drag emily into hetalia - as soon as she gets back and is somewhat recovered from jetlag and such. i'm not that heartless, i wouldn't dump something as soul-sucking as hetalia on someone still working on school work. i'm surprised it hasn't affected my school work much. and they are actual plans, like, i'm planning out what to link her to first. i'm not bringing up the coms unless she's really interested in them, because god have i been completely sucked in.

i just remembered! i might be working wellness at MOMs because they're down to only 3 people there and they could really use the help. i know fred is going to talk to ellie about it. it'll certainly give me more hours, though it may hinder those nj plans somewhat. we'll make it work, i do want to do that trip. [haha....] i'm just nervous about wellness because it's so specialized and i know next to nothing about it. i'm not sure how much help i would be, but we'll see. i at least know where everything pretty much is and a few things i remember from that week back when i was first hired.

and now i think i'll end my rambling with a random pic from my growing collection of hetalia stuff.
yum otp! by the amazing iraya-sama. seriously, i stalk her.

14 October 2009

people!

yasha has recently been hanging out with another russian guy, stan. i got to hang with them some last weekend when i went home, and he's pretty cool.

and i'm half convinced he's flirting. i have no idea, really. maybe i'm just hopeful? that might be weird... i'm hardly in touch with my deeper emotions at all, which is why i find it hard to be in a meaningful relationship. i'm really starting to think i won't ever "fall in love" enough to want marriage [or the equivalent if it's a girl]. honestly, i really enjoyed what emily and i had. though i guess that was just friendship with the pretense of a relationship... idk.

now that i remember it, yasha's "plan for our future" is starting to look like what might happen. as in, we'll eventually hook up and adopt some russian kid and he'll teach me russian and it'll be awesome or something. idk...

if i am crushing on stan, i think it would be best in the long run to ignore it. because i don't want something like with christian happening again. though from what little i know of stan, he seems much more easy-going, and more likely to be open/able to still be friends after the fact.

why do i stress myself with these thoughts?

yasha told me that jo wanted to come down with him for the zombie walk in a couple weeks. honestly, i'm not too fond of her right now. i think i'm feeling hurt and unhappy with her on yasha's part, cuz he certainly isn't... and i just don't want to deal with her. she's... yeah. so, no i don't want her to come down for that, and because i don't want to deal with 2 extra people in the house - 2 extra people in my room. if we had a sofa, it might be okay. but since they'd be attached to me they'd have to sleep in my room.

also related to the zombie walk: i feel the need to share somewhere that october 24 is also united nations day, or unofficial hetalia day. and so fans all over the world are planning little get-together-picnic-cosplay-fun-times. there's one in dc and one west of here in martinsville or something... but i have a strange need to comment on one of those closer ones that i'd like to go to one, but i'll instead be wandering around carytown in richmond as a zombie. if i had some cosplay available to me, i might dress up as a zombie nation [prolly casual canada, cuz then i'd just need a red sweatshirt and i'd be set], but that's too much work and i'd feel like an über nerd... so, regular zombie for me! i'll prolly end up with the same pants as last year, since they're already stained...

i'll need to get some more paint...

classes!
textiles is turning super easy right now. we're doing several types of weaving with now [tapestry, coil basketry, twining] and they're all so mindlessly repetitive that i can just go go go and get it done ridiculously fast. also, these activities are successfully distracting me from my terribly horribly crippling hetalia addiction/obsession. which is good! because it really is unhealthy...

jewelry is going ok. we're making tension-fit containers. mine is a little box with a sand dollar for a lid. sheal gave me some porcelain to make it, but i have to work my little thing into the kiln schedule so that it's done in time for our crit, and honestly i don't want to deal with that. because i'm lazy. so i got some sculpy and am gonna make at least 2 shells with that [just to be sure]. but i still need to get some pearls for the feet and lid-handle thing before i can solder my already made pieces together - i need to drill the rivet holes for the feet before i bend the midsection, and i can't do that until i know how big a hole i need to drill, which comes from the holes in the pearls.

grr...

i believe i'm managing to pull myself up in biology. i got some caffeine pills, and today was day 3 with them, and i've taken about 3 times as much notes as before. horray!!

HOLY CRAP TODAY THE PRESALE STARTED FOR TEGAN AND SARA'S NEW TOUR AND THEY'RE COMING TO THE NATIONALLLLL!!! so i was sitting in the library with my laptop, and it was 10, so i went and got my ticket. because i'm excited. i spent $40, and i hope the presale price is less than the regular price.

i am in such deep shit as far as my personal finances go... i desperately need a job. angela strong-armed me [sort of] into doing comic-con, and i finally got my ticket. i'm secretly sure i'll never be able to afford it, since the parents are letting me go as long as i can pay for it all. we'll see if i have any hope by the time the hotel deals open... i might stand a chance if i had a job or something... i dipped under $1000 last week... i'm now down to a little over $800 and i'm crazy depressed. i have errands to run tomorrow [reading days hell yeahhh] and i'm going to be using the master card because i have no hope of paying otherwise. i really need to crack down on my spending, like no joke.

[wow, this is ridiculously stream-of-consciousness...]

november 4 is the wolfmother concert at 9:30 club. i got my greyhound tickets, which came to about $38 total because of how far in advance i got them and the fact that i finally got that student advantage card. my own money, since i'll be sneaking around for this. i'm waiting till the week before to tell nate [bio lab man] that i will likely be late on the 5th, and if i get in too late can i go to his noon lab? shouldn't be a problem, but i'm hoping that won't happen. my bus is scheduled to get in at 9:25 that morning. class is at 10. from the station i catch the city bus around 9:45 back to campus, and i'll be about 10 minutes late. so i'll miss the quiz. that is all assuming the greyhound is on time, which is unlikely considering the time [morning rush hour and all that].

and lastly, today. continued horrible shower problems. the hot water tap decided, after a short bout of sputtering, to not dispense anything, no matter how far you turned it. i was getting really pissed cuz i really really needed a shower, and didn't really have the time to wait for liz to get back to me about possibly borrowing hers. so i filled the bucket we have in the kitchen with nice warm water and took it up to the tub. and i squatted in the tub, soaping myself and rinsing with that bucket water and a cup. it worked fairly well, and reminded me of japanese baths [the traditional kind, where you wash yourself first from a bucket and then soak in a nice hot tub]. i'm not sure if a repeat will happen, and i'm not sure if i want it to or not. on the one hand, it was kinda fun, if cold [because our house is cold]. on the other, it was sorta fun, and would likely have been more fun if i wasn't rushing and angry. but it was okay. i just hate our stupid ancient shower.

well, i need dinner. i think i'll make swedish meatballs! yum~

[gosh, so many tags!]

01 September 2009

oh yeahhh

gosh, it's been a while...

NEWS!
i've developed an unhealthy obsession with 'Hetalia.' like, seriously. it's starting to disturb me just how much i'm into it...

i feel like part of my major! making progress on my assignments, though i was just assigned 100 thumbnails for textiles, and i've done 17... though my first felting is going well!

for some dumb reason i've been staying up past 2, sometimes even till 3. this bit me in the ass today as i had to get up at 7:30 for bio. so i was almost falling asleep in all my classes...

MWF library nap times are wonderful! i go up to the 4th floor, find a chair in the back, and practically pass out. still didn't help much today...

cesley ate the last cookie i made. but it's okay, cuz i ate the last banana fritter she made. also, liz needs to step up her cooking.

ces and i are planning a shrimp day. i'm gonna make scampi, or else just saute some shrimp with OLD BAYYYY and maybe cook some fun noodles... not sure what she's gonna do...

i really need to get around to riding my bike. it would probably be very easy MWF at 8:30 cuz there won't be a lot of traffic - people or cars.

i was humiliated today. nicole came over and so we played 4-person games: super smash bros and pokemon stadium 1 & 2 [just the mini games]. i was last place in everything.

i've decided to turn that valance curtain i got at lowes into a little bag. it'll be awesome! i'm thinking of lining it cuz the fabric is so thin, which means another curtain or a trip to BF...

i recently discovered an amazing website: mylifeisaverage.com. it makes me want to build forts and make dumb harry potter references and be a general dork.

today i realized what i want my first tattoo to be of: a narwhal. now i just have to figure out where to put it...

it was decided last week by the roomies [under the influence of a 1am trip to 7-11] that i would get completely smashed on jello shots.

yasha has made me promise to not get smashed on jello shots until he can be there. i'm half-tempted to try 1 or 2 before then, so i have some idea of what i'm getting myself into.

damn, i really want some jello now. cuz it's pretty fucking awesome.

i think i'm falling behind in english 215. i keep not reading what we're supposed to, in favor of my continued 'Hetalia' obsession. this really needs to change or i'll be in trouble for those tests...

the basement storage leaks when it rains. and once it rained really hard and some water managed to get into my room, under my desk. maintenance came, but have yet to do anything...

sometimes i think about christian and what he thinks of me now. but i'm too afraid to ask yasha, though i'm not really sure why...

i get to dissect a fetal pig in bio lab. for 2 weeks straight. not really looking forward to that...

yesterday i renamed my recycle bin 'narnia' after a MLIA about renaming it 'hell'. now when i recycle stuff i won't feel guilty cuz it gets to go to narnia. [not that i felt guilty...]

i have orange hair. and it's pretty awesome. when i run out of the color i got, i may ask yasha for the other half of his. but maybe he wants it...

either way, i'm waiting for this to fade almost completely before redying it. that way i help save my hair from a horrible over-dyed death.

i think i'll go to bed now. or at least lie in bed listening to my ipod. which i re-renamed 'silvia' yesterday.
